Football League Championship

The Football League Championship, often called the Championship or the Coca-Cola Football League Championship, is the highest division of the Football League and the second highest division overall in the English football league system.

Previously the Football League Championship was known as the Football League First Division and was revamped in the 2004-2005 season. That season the league recorded a total attendance of 9.8 million, which was the fourth highest total attendance for a European football division.

The Football League Championship is comprised of 24 teams and runs from August to May of the following year. In this division each team plays twice against the others in the league, once at home and once away from home.

The top two teams at the end of each season are promoted to the Premier League while the bottom three sides are relegated to the Football League One. The teams that finish in positions 3-6 compete in the Football League Championship Play-Offs in which the winner gain promotion to the Premier League.
