In the game of hockey, checking is normally not a penalty. Checking is preventing a player from moving or keeping them in check, while cross checking utilizes the stick. Of course, it is different from stick checking, using the staff or shaft part of the hockey stick to check the player holding your arms out straight and extending them behind the hand. Checking is not always a penalty offense, but cross checking is a penalty and depending on how severely it is done, it can be either a minor offense or a major penalty. Cross checking is yet another reason to keep the hockey stick close and in check at all times.
