He was born on March 20, 1982. Born and raised on Long Beach, he began playing at the Recreation Park Municipal Golf Course. At only 19 years old, he won the Southern California Golf Association Amateur Championship – making him the youngest winner since Tiger Woods. He also led the UCLA Bruins in winning the Pac-10 Men’s Golf Championships.

Ranking at 21st on the money list gained him his 2007 PGA Tour Card. He went to Q-School and became the first player to improve his status through this. He finished T-4 – his best finish for 2007 – during the Reno-Tahoe Open.

In 2008, Merrick got 4 top-ten finishes which greatly increased his earnings to more than $1 million. He finished T-16 in the Bob Hope Classic, T-3 (his career best) in the Mayakoba Golf Classic at Riviera Maya-Cancun, T-7 in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and T-6 at Torrey Pines.

It was in 2009 that he placed second at the 2009 Bob Hope Classic. He also finished T-6 at the Puerto Rico Open, T-6 when he played his first Masters, T-10 at the 2009 PGA Championships, and T-7 in the 2009 Omega Mission Hills World Cup.

Crediting his father for teaching him to play golf at a young age, Merrick also lists his parents as personal heroes.
