Marana, Arizona, March 3, 2008 - Geoff Ogilvy won his second Match Play title in four years by beating English golfer Paul Casey. Ogilvy was playing good in the last 62 holes of the tournament, deftly avoiding a bogey on his card for the last 57 holes, closing the win with a 6-foot birdie on the 15th hole. Ogilvy bagged the $1.4 million purse with this win, as well as became the first player in the year to win multiple times in the PGA. The Australian won his first tournament of the year in Kapalua.
Ogilvy’s his first win in Tucson was in 2005 at the old Tucson Open, followed by a win at the US Open, three wins at the WCG and another victory at the winners-only Mercedes-Benz championship.
English golfer Paul Casey also started well; leading 79 of the 80 holes in the previous 18-hole matches. However, he failed to match Ogilvy’s birdie from 6 feet on the first hole, and things got worse from there. After missing far too many putts, all the defeated Englishman could say was , “I have no excuses right now.”
The tournament began heavy with the buzz of Tiger Woods’ return only to fizzle when he was sent home early. Now true golf fans had a chance to see the match-play prowess of other players, and this time the spotlight was on Ogilvy.
