A Sri Lankan team physio Tommy Simsek speaking to srilankacricket.lk said that clinical tests revealed a Grade 1 strain of his right adductor muscle.
Murali will be advised to rest for 2-3 weeks.
The national selectors are expected to decide on his replacement on Monday.
