West Indies, who were the defending champions and India, who had unexpectedly reached the final, clashed in this match. Clive Lloyd was the captain of West Indies and the skipper of the Indian side was Kapil Dev Nikhanj. BJ Meyer and HD Bird were chosen as umpires for this match. The toss was won by West Indies and they opted to field.

India innings

Sunil Gavaskar, the master craftsman from India, was caught by Jeff Dujon off the bowling of Andy Roberts for 2. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, the opening batsman and Mohinder Amarnath, the No. 3 batsman collaborated for a 57 run partnership. When the score was 59, Srikkanth was trapped leg before wicket to Malcolm Marshall. He scored 38 runs in 57 deliveries inclusive of 7 fours and 1 sixer. Then, Amarnath was bowled by Michael Holding on a personal score of 26 in 80 balls. At this juncture, the scoreboard read 3 for 90. Only 2 runs later, Yashpal Sharma was caught by a substitute off the bowling of Larry Gomes when he had made 11 runs in 32 deliveries. The next pair of batsmen, Kapil Dev and Sandeep Patil took the score to 110, but Kapil was caught by Holding off the bowling of Gomes. He made 15 runs in only 8 balls and hit 3 fours. Kirti Azad and Roger Binny were cheaply dismissed on 0 and 2 respectively. Patil and Madan Lal struck a partnership of 23 runs. Patil was caught by Gomes off the bowling of Garner when he had hit 27 runs in 29 deliveries. The tailenders from India showed some resistance to the West Indies pace attack and added 30 more runs. West Indies innings

The West Indies innings began disastrously. Gordon Greenidge, the opening batsman, was bowled by Balwinder Sandhu for 1 run. Further, Desmond Haynes and Vivian Richards exhibited a partnership of 45 runs, which was broken when Haynes was caught by Roger Binny off the bowling of Madan Lal for 13 off 33 balls. Richards had to return back to the pavilion when he was caught by Kapil off the bowling of Madan Lal. He hit 7 boundaries in 28 balls and scored 33 runs. This was a memorable catch by Kapil as he had to run a great distance of 18 to 20 yards to hold the ball. Gomes did not last long and was caught by Gavaskar off the bowling of Madan Lal for 5. Clive Lloyd was caught by Kapil Dev off the bowling of Roger Binny on 8. At this stage, West Indies was struggling at 5 for 66. Faoud Bacchus was on 8 when he was caught by Syed Kirmani off the bowling of Sandhu. Then, Jeff Dujon and Malcolm Marshall resisted the Indian attack and added 43 runs. When the team’s score was 119, Dujon was bowled by Amarnath on 25. Marshall was caught by Gavaskar off the bowling of Mohinder Amarnath for 18. Mohinder Amarnath scored 26 runs and took 3 wickets for 12 runs in 7 overs. For this all round performance, he was honored as the Man of the Match.
