Christy Martin
Christy Martin is a female professional boxer from the United States. Martin was born on June 12, 1968 in Bluefield, West Virginia to father John, a coal miner, and mother, Joyce, a homemaker. Before going into boxing, Martin was a talented basketball player, even receiving a basketball scholarship to Concord University, located in Athens, WV where she was able to earn a degree in Education. It was during her college years where she was able to win a contest called the “Tough Woman” contest.
At 21 years old, Martin started boxing professionally, but was greeted with a defeat against Andrea Buchanan. Martin recovered, and won the rematch against Buchanan in a fight held a month later. Martin then succumbed to Andrea DeShong, but was able to recover with nineteen consecutive wins.
It was in 1993 when Martin had her very first title fight, which was against Beverly Szymansky, for the WBC’s Jr. Welterweight world championship. Martin won by knocking out Szymansky in the third round. For her first title defense, she faced off against Laura Serrano, who was making her debut into the world of professional boxing.
Martin has a record of 49 victories, 5 defeats, and 3 draws. Among her victories, 31 of them were achieved via knockout.
