Cappie Pondexter is an American professional basketball player in the WNBA. She is a two-time WNBA Champion, a WNBA Finals MVP, and a Gold medalist in the 2008 Olympic Games. She currently plays in the point guard position for the Indiana Fever.

She was born on January 7, 1983 in Oceanside, California. She is the daughter of Vanessa and Leo Pondexter and has one brother, Ronald Brown, and one sister, Latoya Pondexter.

Although born in California, Pondexter was raised in Chicago. Pondexter attended John Marshall High School, where she was named the 2001 National Player of the Year by the WBCA and Parade Magazine, and was elected as the 2001 Illinois Player of the Year by Gatorade and USA Today.

She was the first player in the state to twice be named Illinois Miss Basketball (2000, 2001, and during her four years, Marshall compiled a 116-8 record and earned three Chicago Public League titles, the 1998 Illinois state crown and a 1999 state runner-up finish.

Pondexter attended Rutgers University, where she graduated with a degree in African studies. She led the Scarlet Knights to a 97-22 record and back-to-back Big East Championships in 2005 and 2006.

Pondexter was selected 2nd overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury. As a rookie, she was named to the western conference WNBA All-star team. She has played for Turkey during the WNBA off-season since 2006.

She played a major role in the Mercury’s championship campaign and became the 2007 WNBA Finals MVP. She became the first player in the league’s history to win three consecutive Western Conference Player of the Week in the 2009 Season. She was instrumental yet again in boosting the Mercury to win the 2009 WNBA championship.

She was traded to the New York Liberty on March 2010. A year later, she was voted as one of the Top 15 players in the last 15 years. Pondexter was traded again to the Chicago Sky on February 2015. In the next season, she was named as one of the all-time top 20 players in the WNBA.

Pondexter transferred to the Los Angeles Sparks on 2018 but was waived by the team shortly after. She transferred to the Indiana Fever on July 1, 2018.
