Marlins win on Uggla's 9th inning slam

Cole Hamels struck out 13 batters, and allowed only 2 runs over 8 innings of great pitching.

Cole Hamels struck out 13 batters, and allowed only 2 runs over 8 innings of great pitching. Chase Utley beat out a potential game-ending double play to drive in the tying run in the top of the 9th inning. It was all for nothing though, as Tom Gordon loaded the bases in the 9th and gave up a walk-off Grand Slam to Dan Uggla.

Both Hamels and Andrew Miller pitched well, to say the least. Hamels gave up a solo home run to Jorge Cantu in the first inning, and then didn’t allow a baserunner again until Cantu homered again in the 7th. Hamels retired 17 straight batters between homers. Miller had a 14 batter stretch where he did not allow a baserunner, and ended up allowing only 1 run on 4 hits.

The Phillies loaded the bases in the 9th after Utley’s RBI, but failed to score. The Marlins were not so forgiving, as Uggla crushed his first game winning homerun deep into the left field seats, which were basically empty, despite the Marlins’ recent success. Despite blowing the save in the 9th, Kevin Gregg earned the victory, his fifth of the season.
