Charel Allen was born on July 23, 1986 in Monessen, Pennsylviania, the daughter of Rotina and Lee Johnson. She is the oldest of four children.
High School
Charel was the second-highest scorer in Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) history, and the fifth-highest scorer in Pennsylvania state history with 3,110 points (making her only one of eight Pennsylvania players to score over 3,000 points.)
As a senior, Charel averaged 26.1 points, 8.1 rebounds, 5.4 assists and 5.1 steals per game with .378 three-point percentage while leading her team to a 29-2 record and the Class A state title. During her four-year career at Monessen High School, her team posted a 100-19 (.840) record.
Charel was rated No. 27 in nation by Blue Star Index, and picked up a host of awards during her career.
University
Charel attended Notre Dame's College of Arts and Letters with a double major in sociology and computer applications. She played basketball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish from 2004-2008 under coach Muffet McGraw.
Charel came off the bench in both her freshman and sophomore seasons. During her junior season, however, she started in all 32 games, and indeed was only one of three players to start all 32 games.
In her senior year, Charel cemented her reputation as one of the top all-around players in Notre Dame women's college basketball history.
A two-time honorable mention All-America selection and first-team all-BIG EAST Conference pick, Allen was the first Irish women's basketball player ever to record 1,500 points (1,566), 500 rebounds (656), 200 assists (239) and 200 steals (206) in her career. She also ranks eighth all-time at Notre Dame with 1,566 points.
Charel started all 34 games, ranking 11th in the BIG EAST in scoring (15.1 ppg), fifth in free throw percentage (.815) and 12th in steals (1.85 spg).

Charel was selected in the third round of the 2008 WNBA Draft - the 43rd pick overall - by the Sacramento Monarchs.
