Akash Chopra is an Indian cricketer who has played for the Indian national cricket team. He played for the team for a very short period of time from the late 2003 until the late 2004. He was mainly noted for his calm approach towards cricket. Chopra is a right handed batsman and a right arm medium pace bowler. He mainly started as a defensive opening batsman and a close catcher in test matches
Chopra is well known for his solid defense and for his typical flamboyant stroke play. He was an opener for the state of Delhi in India. Chopra made his first domestic debut in 1996-97 season in the Ranji Tophy. His score for the first season was 422 runs including two centuries with an average of 70.33.
He continued his form the following season with 617 runs at an average of 68.55 runs per match, including two centuries and a double century of 222 runs. Chopra compiled 479 at 53 with one century in the following Ranji campaign. His Duleep Trophy performance were better, compiling 478 runs at 95.6, including two centuries in four matches, ranking him fourth in the run scoring list, but was unable to secure a hat-trick of Duleep titles for North Zone.
His international career began in the late 2003. Chopra made his Test debut in Ahmedabad against New Zealand. Chopra's international career started well enough, scoring two half-centuries against New Zealand during 2003-04 season in the second Test in Mohali. On the following tour to Pakistan with the likes of Virender Sehwag he was able to achieve one more century in the first test in Multan, Pakistan.
However at the end of 2004 season, Chopra was unable to maintain his consistent form and his career average also decreased drastically from 46.25 to only 23 in one year itself. Further Chopra was replaced by Delhi team- mate Gautam Gambhir.
Due to his low scoring rate, he has not been considered for One Day Internationals. Chopra is currently playing in Staffordshire, a County team in England.
