Kimberly Laurin Beck was born in Atlanta, Georgia to Shyril Elise Beck. She has one sister, named Robin.

Kimberly attended Woodward Academy, where she was a three-time team MVP, and three-time team captain. She was also named to the all-region team three times and was the region's Player of the Year twice. She Finished her career with more than 1,000 points and over 800 assists. She also competed as a member of the Georgia Dream Team AAU squad for three years.

Kimberly attented George Washington University, where she majoried in history. She played basketball for the Colonials under coach Joe McKeown.
She played from 2004 to 2008. She received the Associated Press All-American Honorable Mention in 2007, as well as the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year. She was All-Atlantic 10 First Team in 2006 and 2007. She made the All-Atlantic 10 All-Defensive Team in 2006 and 2007 as well. She was one of three national finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award in 2007.

Kimberly was the 36th overall pick in the 2008 WNBA draft, being chosen 8th in the third round by the Seattle Storm.
