Ivan Helgeura is a veteran Spanish defender who currently plays for La Liga outfits Valencia. He is reputed to be one of the most experienced and toughest defender in Europe.
Helguera made his debut for the little known Spanish club CD Manchengo in the 1995-1996 season and since then he has been at Albacete, AS Roma, Espanyol Barcelona, Real Madrid (from 1999-2007) and now Valencia whom he joined in the summer of 2007 after winning the Spanish championship with Real Madrid.
Helguera is essentially a central defender who can also play as a sweeper and has featured in the defensive central midfield role too at times.
Helguera has won almost everything there is to be won in club football. He won La Liga thrice with Real Madrid and the UEFA Champions League twice with the same club. He also won this season’s Copa del Rey last month with Valencia.
Helguera doesn’t feature for the Spanish national side these days but he did feature heavily for his country in his young days. He has played 30 times for Spain.
