Cameron Keith Maybin is a professional baseball player from the United States of America and plays as a center fielder. Maybin went to the T.C. Robertson High School where he led his team to the state title in his freshman year. Stellar performances ensured that Maybin was named as the MVP for the tournament. That wasn’t the end of his trophy run as he would go on to win the Connie Mack World Series batting title as well as the World Series MVP award. Maybin was also given the 2004 Baseball America Youth Player of the Year.
High school ended and Maybin decided to go in for the MLB Amateur Draft. He was positioned as the most promising outfielder as well as the third-best hitting prospect in the country. However, the supposed difficulty that teams would face in signing him made him drop to the 10th spot in the rankings. It took Maybin 4 months to reach a decision with the Detroit Tigers and the situation had allegedly reached a point where the offer was withdrawn. However, Maybin eventually signed for the Tigers in September, after the end of the minor league season, with a signing bonus of $2.65 million.
Maybin began his playing career with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the Class-A division and continued his high school form and took them to the Midwest League championships with a .304 batting average that helped him knock 9 over the walls while stealing 27-bases. Picked for the All-Star Futures Game, Maybin was also awarded the Class-A Playoff Performer Award by MiLB.com in November 2006.
In 2006, it was the advanced-A or High-A division in the Florida State League for Maybin and playing with the Lakeland Flying Tigers, Maybin continued his progress through the ranks as he made his way to the to the Erie Seawolves by August in the same year.
Maybin continued in the Class-AA league with the Carolina Mudcats and was batting at .262 with 12 homers and 38 RBIs to his name when he got a call up to the Detroit Tigers in August, 2007. He had two strikeouts on his debut against the New York Yankees however by his second game, he got his first hit as well as his first home run off Roger Clemens.
Maybin had an eventful second game as he got hit by Clemens on his next at bat before stealing his first base in the MLB – all against Roger Clemens.
In December 2007, Maybin was a part of the 5-man contingent that was traded out to the Florida Marlins in exchange for Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera. Maybin had a spectacular start for the Marlins in 2008, hitting on 9 of his 11 at-bats. He ended the season with a .500 batting average from 32 at-bats with 4 stolen bases.
In the 2008 season, Maybin slowly made his way into the starting centerfielder’s role, a spot that he earned against the Washington Nationals. However the 2009 season was slower for Maybin and soon, after 26 games and a .202 batting average, Maybin was assigned to the AAA league for some more practice to play at the top level.
