Zoran Planinic was a member of Benston Zagreb during the 1999-2000 season. From 2000 to 2003, he represented Cibona Zagreb, which is a Croatian Club. In 2001, he was chosen as the Croatian League Most Valuable Player. During the 2003 NBA draft, he was selected by New Jersey Nets in the 1st round. He was the 22nd pick and overall 22nd pick. He played in the NBA for 3 seasons and in these had an average of 1.1 assists, 1.4 rebounds and 4 points per game. The singular prominent moment of his stint in the NBA was on 9th November 2005 against the Utah Jazz. He exhibited a marvelous full court 77-foot buzzer beater at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Planinic represented TAU Ceramica from the 2006 to 2008 season. On 25th June 2008, he signed a contract of 2 years with CSKA Moscow, a Russian League Club.
