Tyrone Carter, whose nickname is “Chowder,” is a strong safety for the NFL's Pittsburgh Steelers. He was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings out of the University of Minnesota in the fourth round in 2000 and was the 118th pick overall. In 1999, he received the Jim Thorpe Award as college football’s best defensive back.

He played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2000 to 2002 and then for the New York Jets in 2003. He's been with the Pittsburgh Steelers since 2004 and was part of the Super Bowl XL championship team.

In eight seasons, he's played in 119 games and made 378 tackles (302 solo tackles) and four interceptions. In 2003 while playing for the New York Jets, he finished the season with 88 tackles, his highest single season total. That same year Carter took in two interceptions.

Carter is a tough and aggressive player, and although he is diminutive for a strong safety, Carter willingly and earnestly takes on bigger backs and tight ends. He plays primarily as a backup and on special teams and does well in this role. He possesses a fine understanding of the game, solid experience and tenaciousness. Carter is a skilled role player.
