Major Dhyan Chand Singh was born on 29 August 1905 in Prayag, Uttar Pradesh; he died on 3 December 1979 in Delhi, India. He was more commonly called as Dhyan.

Dhyan Chand was a former Indian hockey player. He is considered a legend in both the Indian and the Hockey Team. He started to succeed in his professional career in the year 1928 where he had gone to represent India in the Summer Olympics in Amsterdam. He considerably helped India win the gold medal in the Olympics by scoring two goals out of three versus Netherlands. During 1935, he went to the India tour of Australia and New Zealand. India had played 48 matches which had included the three Test matches against Australia and New Zealand. India won all of the matches wherein Dhyan Chand had scored 200 goals out of the 584 goals.

Dhyan Chand was a great athlete that the president of India that time had declared August 29, his birthday, as the National Sports Day in India. The president also put up a statue at the main entrance of the National stadium. He was also a member of the country’s army in which he retired as a major in 1956.

In 1979, he fell into a coma and later died at his deathbed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.
