In April 2008, Koufos decided to declare for the 20008 NBA Draft and was picked at 23rd overall by the Utah Jazz. Initially, Koufos had not signed an agent, making him eligible to return to college if he so desired. However after much speculation about playing in Greece, he decided to sign an agent.
Although Koufos holds an American and Greek passport, he chose to play for the Greek national team at the 2007 FIBA Under-18 World Championships. He was at the forefront, leading the Greeks to the finals of the tournament before losing out to Serbia. Koufos led the tournament in scoring, blocks and rebounds and was named as the MVP for the tournament.
For the Jazz, Koufos has become the backup center behind Mehmet Okur and starts almost all the games on the bench.
