Sergio Volpi developed at the youth academy of Italian club Brescia and after playing for them for the 1994-1995 season he made his first team debut for Brescia in 1995. He played for them for the 1995-996 season and subsequently went onto play for Bari,Venezia and Piacenza.
Volpi signed for Sampdoria in 2002 and played for them until 2008, scoring 22 goals in 193 league matches. In the summer of 2008 he was signed by Bologna.
Sergio Volpi made his international debut for Italy in 2004 against the Czech Republic when he was 30 years of age.
