Sandy Lyle

Alexander Walter Barr "Sandy" Lyle is a professional Scottish golfer. He was born on February 9, 1958 in Shrewsbury, England. He is known as one of the players on top of Britain during the 1980s. He spent an amazing 167 weeks sitting on the top 10 list of the Official World Golf Rankings from his debut in 1986 up to 1989. He learned to play the game by his late father who also played the game as a professional at Hawkstone Park in England. He toyed with miniature golf clubs at a tender age of 3.

As an amateur, Lyle represented Scotland in his games. His amateur career was not a failure as he won the Brabazon Trophy twice – in 1975 and 1977.

By 1977, Lyle turned pro, and made a firm decision to represent Scotland. He showcased his playing quality by grabbing the title at the Open Championship in 1985, which was held at Sandwich. He was the first British golfer to win since Tony Jacklin made it to the scene in 1969. He contributed to the rise of the European golf players in the International scene. He was also a member of Europe’s representing team to the Ryder Cup which won the tournament at Belfry in 1985.

Known for his placid exterior and cool temperament, Lyle has inspired a number of his rivals to do even better and improve their games. In 2006, he published a book called “To the Fairway Born.”

Over the course of his career, Lyle has won a total of 27 professional titles. Of these titles, two are Major Championship titles – the 1988 Masters and the 1985 Open Championship.
