Abdelkader was drafted by Detroit in 2005, immediately after high school. He went on to play college hockey at Michigan State, where he won the 2007 NCAA Championship. He joined the Red Wings in 2008, and forfeited his last year of eligibility at Michigan State.
Abdelkader played for Team USA at the 2007 World Junior Championships, where he won a bronze medal.
