Quarterback Josh McCown is a six-year veteran of the NFL who has spent much of his time as a backup. McCown recently signed a deal with the Miami Dolphins. The Arizona Cardinals chose him in the third-round of the 2002 NFL Draft; he was the 81st pick overall, coming out of Sam Houston State.
In six seasons, McCown has played for three teams, making the Dolphins his fourth club. After being a Cardinal for four seasons, he spent one year each was with the Detroit Lions (2006) and another with the Oakland Raiders (2007).
The six-foot-four, 213-pound McCown has played in a total of 46 NFL games. He's completed 57.7-percent of his passes, hitting 609 of 1052 attempts for 6,582 yards. He's thrown 35 touchdowns and 40 interceptions, earning a QB rating of 71.6.
Although he has good size and athleticism, the quarterback has proven to be a streaky performer who lacks awareness and instincts. Making bad decisions, he's prone to throwing the ball to the opposition rather than throwing it away. McCown has good timing, a strong arm and fine velocity. He's also a confident performer. But unless he can learn to keep his cool under pressure, read defenses and react to oncoming rushes, he'll continue to be a second or third string player.
