Mark Calcavecchia is a professional golfer from America who was born on June 12, 1960 in Laurel, Nebraska. He spent his college days in the University of Florida where he earned All-SEC honors by 1979. In 1981, Mark turned professional and just one year after, he joined the PGA Tour.
Mark was known very well in the late 1980s for his performance. His greatest achievement was when he won The Open Championship in 1989. The Open Championship is one of the four major championships in golf. Mark won The Open Championship by making a four-hole playoff over his opponents Greg Norman and Wayne Grady. 1989 was the only multi-win season for Mark on the PGA Tour. He also won two other titles aside from the Open that year. His most notable performance in 1988 was by finishing second to Sandy Lyle in the Masters.
From the day he joined the PGA Tour, Mark has won 13 times as well as 11 times in other professional golf events. He stayed in the top 10 Official World Golf Rankings for over 100 weeks from the year 1988 to 1991. Mark also made the United States team for the Ryder Cup four times in 1987, 1989, 1991 and 2002. His most memorable performance in the Ryder Cup was when he broke down after losing to Colin Montgomerie.
In 2008, Mark ranks at number 110th on the Money List. He has earned a total of $784,809 in this year alone.
