Phil Mickelson

Phil Mickelson or “Lefty” as called by many, won several golf tournaments swinging his left-hand even though he is right-handed. This American professional golfer was born on June 16, 1970 in San Diego, California and started playing golf at a very young age of 18 months. He attended Arizona State in college on a golf scholarship and graduated in 1992 then turned professional in that same year.

Before pro golf, he already won several amateur titles which include the NCAA Championship, the Amateur U.S. title and the PGA Tour Northern Telecom Open in college.

As a professional, he was the man who put a stop to Tiger Woods’ winning streak at the 2000 Buick Invitational tournament. He won a total of 43 professional wins, including 3 Major Championships with 2 at The Masters in 2004 and 2006, and at the PGA Championships in 2005.

He recently won the Northern Trust Open by February 2009 at the Riviera Country Club, as well as the WGC-CA Championship on March that same year, defeating Nick Watney with 1 stroke.

By May 2009, Mickelson’s wife, Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer. He decided to take a break from golf to be by her side. The doctors were assured that his wife will recover since the cancer was detected at an early stage. And so, by June 2009, he returned and played at the St. Jude Classic. Then he made it as a runner up to Lucas Glover at the 2009 U.S. Open.

A month after his return, in July, he announced that his mother was also diagnosed with breast cancer. He took a break again from golf to support his mother. Then, by the end of July, Mickelson will be back to participate at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Hazeltine National Golf Club.
