Gilberto da Silva Melo is a Brazilian international football player who currently features for the English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur. He is a left back.

Gilberto has played for a number of clubs in his time. He started at America FC in 1993 and moved to Brazilian giants Flamengo in 1996. After featuring in 67 league matches and scoring 2 goals in two seasons, he was signed by Cruzeiro and in the summer of 1999 he earned a huge move to Italian giants Inter Milan.

However Gilberto flopped at Inter and returned to Brazil to play for Vasco da Gama in 2000. He subsequently performed for Gremio, Sao Caetano and then moved to German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin in 2004.

Gilberto was a huge hit at Hertha Berlin and played 101 Bundesliga games for Berlin, scoring 14 goals. He was a huge hit for Hertha Berlin and came into worldwide notice because of his time spent in Germany.

North London side Tottenham Hotspur signed Gilberto from Hertha Berlin.

Gilberto made his international debut for Brazil in 2003 and has played 23 matches for his nation, scoring one goal. He featured for his nation at the 2006 Germany World Cup and scored against Japan.
