From 2002 through 2005, Estaban played little in the bigs, appearing in a total of 50 games.

On December 8, 2005, during the Winter Meetings, he was acquired by Kansas City for minor leaguer Fabio Castro.

From 2006 onward, Estaban's batting improved and he began to receive more playing time for the Royals.
