In 1996, he was converted from an outfielder to a pitcher.

He played in the Majors for the last half of the 1997 season, and was waived after the 1998 season ended.

He was claimed by the Oakland A's, but saw limited action, and was traded to the Florida Marlins in May 2000.

After a brief stop with the San Diego Padres, he signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Ron signed with the Texas Rangers in December 2002, and started the 2003 season with the AAA Oklahoma RedHawks. In June of that year, he was called up to Texas, and was a permament fixture until July 30, 2007, when he was traded along with Mark Teixeira to the Atlanta Braves.

In 2008, Ron signed a two-year deal with the Kansas City Royals.
