Ernests Gulbis is a Latvian professional tennis player. He was born on August 30, 1988 in Riga, Latvia to parents Ainars (father; investment businessman and former basketball player) and Milena (mother; drama theatre actress). He has three sisters: Elina, Laura, and Monika. Both Laura and Monika also play tennis. His brother, Kristops, builds model planes and cars. Gulbis is currently coached by Karl-Heinz Wetter.

Gulbis turned pro in 2004 and immediately posted a 1-5 record. In 2005, he made his debut into the Davis Cup, and won his first career Futures title in an event in Friedberg, Germany by defeating Zimmerman. He reached semi-finals at another Futures event, this time in Latvia, but he lost to Boretti. He also played doubles in the Davis Cup against Slovenia with his partner, Juska, in the same year.

By 2006, Gulbis’ ranking rise after participating in his first successful ATP event in his career, which he managed to finish in the semi-finals. He had a very outstanding run in March, managing to win a title at the Futures event held in Switzerland. He then reached back-to-back finals at a Futures event held in France. Late in July of 2006, Gulbis lost to Mayer at the Tampere Challenger, in a game of three sets.

Over the course of his career, Gulbis has a record of 31-33 for singles, and 9-7 for doubles. He has yet to win an ATP title, or even a Grand Slam title. However, for his debuts at the Grand Slams, he has shown impress performance in each event. As for his highest ranking achieved, Gulbis has reached No. 38 for singles (achieved in August 4, 2008), and No. 160 in doubles (achieved on June 25, 2007).
