Derek Anderson is the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns. Anderson, who was chosen by the Baltimore Ravens, was a sixth round pick out of Oregon State in the 2005 NFL Draft. He was the 213th pick overall.
In the 2003 season with Oregon State, Anderson threw for 4,058 yards, which is an OSU record. His 79 career touchdown passes, also an Oregon State record, ranks second overall in the Pac-10. He also set the school record for career passing yards at 11,249 yards.
Originally drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2005, he was waived on September 20, 2005, without ever taking a snap. He was claimed by his present team, the Cleveland Browns, the next day.
In two seasons, Anderson has played in 21 games, including starting all 16 regular-season contests in 2007. In 2007, he tossed 29 touchdowns and 19 interceptions. His rating was 78.9. He also ran for three touchdowns and fumbled twice, losing one. Last season, his play earned him a spot on the Pro Bowl roster.
Anderson, who is six-foot-six and 229 pounds, is a solidly framed player who has excellent arm strength and the ability to make all NFL throws. He's a drop back passer who sets up quickly and features a quick release. His mobility and decision-making have improved. Anderson is not the strongest athlete and will need to apply himself thoroughly in order to enjoy years of success in the league.
