Smith amassed an array of awards while at OSU. In 2006, he won the Heisman Trophy, was the College Football Player of the Year and the MVP of the Fiesta Bowl. That same year, he was also the Associated Press Player of the Year, the Davey O'Brien Award winner and Walter Camp Award selection.

Smith is sturdy and tough at six-foot-even and 220 pounds. He's shown patience in the pocket and has improved his throwing motion. Sacks tend to not be a problem with him as he's able to make quick, good decisions regarding throwing the ball away. He has good feet that allow him to find more time and to connect with his receivers. In the past, he's had some behavior and work ethic issues, but he seems to have worked those out. His height is marginal and that could hamper him. He's matured quickly, possesses sound leadership skills and is highly competitive. He could be a number one NFL QB.
