Philip Rivers was the fourth overall pick in the 2004 NFL Draft. The San Diego Chargers chose Rivers in the first round. Prior to the draft, he played his college ball with North Carolina State.
While playing for NC State, Rivers received numerous honors, including ACC Athlete of the Year (2004), Senior Bowl MVP (2004) and ACC Rookie of the Year (2000). He was also the Tangerine Bowl MVP (2000, 2003), Gator Bowl MVP (2002) and Tangerine Bowl Offensive MVP (2001). He finished his college career with 13,484 passing yards and 95 touchdown passes.
In his first two seasons with the Chargers, Rivers saw limited action. In 2006, he was designated as the team's starting quarterback. That same season, he was selected to the Pro Bowl. Rivers threw 22 touchdowns and nine picks that season. His QB rating was 92.0, and he completed 61.7-percent of his passes for 3,388 yards. In four seasons, Rivers has played in 36 games, completing 60.8-percent of his passes and amassing 6,688 yards. He's hit for 44 touchdowns and threw 25 interceptions. His rating stands at 86.6.
The six-foot-five, 228-pound Rivers has the right size and the proper frame to excel in the NFL. He's a fine leader, smart player and excellent decision-maker. He sees the entire field, checks off well and is poised in the pocket. His release and footwork need to be developed. Rivers looks to be durable and tough; he should be a solid starter for years to come.
