Quarterback Brett Basanez was an undrafted free agent when the Carolina Panthers signed him in 2006. The quarterback played his college football with Northwestern University.

He won numerous awards while at Northwestern, including Sporting News Freshman All-Big Ten (2002), Honorable Mention All-Big Ten (2004) and First-team All-Big Ten (2005). He was also the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year (2005) and SI.com National Player of the Year (2005). He set over 30 school records, including 10,580 passing yards, 22 wins and 44 passing touchdowns (tied).

Brett Basanez stands six-foot-two and weighs in at 210 pounds. He's got fine football smarts and is a true leader. Basanez is able to find and connect with receivers in all parts of the field. But he's raw in terms of mechanics and NFL play. He is presently third on the Panther depth chart. In 2006, he played in one game for the Panthers. It was against the Pittsburg Steelers. He connected on six of 11 passes (54.4-percent) for 56 yards. He threw one interception and finished with a rating of 30.9. In 2007, Basanez saw no action in 2007.
