Shaun Hill came out of the University of Maryland undrafted in 2002. He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings in 2002 and was with the club through the 2005 season. In 2006, he became a San Francisco 49er.

Hill has played sparingly in his career. Although signed by the Vikings from 2002-2005, he only played in one season. In 2005, he appeared in one game with Minnesota where he took two snaps for a total of minus-two yards. Although he made a deal with San Francisco in 2006, he did not appear in a game until 2007. In that season, he played in three contests, throwing 79 passes and completing 54 (68.4%). He totaled 501 yards, hitting for five touchdowns and giving up one interception. He earned a rating of 101.3.

Hill is a fine athlete who possesses some good quarterbacking skills. The six-foot-three, 235-pound Hill is perfectly sized for a NFL signal caller. He moves back well, is quick to set up and has a fast release. The mobile quarterback can elude defenders and shows good timing on throws. He reads defenses relatively well and brings toughness and intelligence to the field. However, he lacks NFL experience and that fact works against him. Sometimes Hill doesn’t recognize the blitz, making him open to sacks. He's also uncomfortable in the pocket and prefers to play outside of it. He has a difficult time throwing the bomb as he lacks arm strength.
