Luke attended Indian River Community College, then transferred to Oklahoma State University-Stillwater where he earned All-Big 12 Conference baseball honors.
He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 9th round of the 2001 amateur draft, and came up through their farm system.

2003 - Kinston Indians in the Carolina League and the Akron Aeros in the Eastern League
2004 - Salem Avalanche in the Carolina League and then the Round Rock Express in the Texas League

Luke was brought up to the majors briefly in 2005, making his debut for the Houston Astros on April 5, 2005.
Career Highlight
Luke became the first Astros rookie to hit for the cycle, while also becoming possibly the first player in Major League Baseball history to accomplish a "reverse natural cycle" (home run, triple, double and single, in that order) on July 28, 2006.
On December 12, 2007, Luke, as well as Troy Patton and Matt Albers, was traded to the Orioles for Miguel Tejada.
