Melvin Mora was born on February 2, 1972 in Agua Negra, Yaracuy State, Venezuela. He is a major league baseball third baseman for the Baltimore Orioles.
Minor Leagues
Melvin was signed out of Venezuela in 1991 by the Houston Astros, at the age of 19.
He spent seven years in the Astros' minors league system, and couple of months in the CPBL's Mercuries Tigers.
New York Mets
Melvin signed as a free agent with the Mets in 1998 and made his major league debut in the 1999 season. As a utility player who could handle all three outfield positions, shortstop, second base and third, he was a valuable asset to the team.
Baltimore Orioles
Melvin was traded by the Mets to Baltimore in the middle of the 2000 season, for Mike Bordick. Also sent to the Orioles were two minor league players and Mike Kinkade.
Melvin continued to be a utility player in Baltimore, until 2004, when he became the everyday third baseman (after his hitting had improved enough for him to warrant the every day position.)
Career
In a nine-year career through 2007, Mora is a .279 hitter with a .357 on-base percentage, 133 home runs and 541 RBI in 1141 games.
Personal
Melvin's father was murdered in Venezuela when he was seven years old, due to a case of mistaken identity
Melvin and his wife Gisel have quintuplets, born on July 28, 2001, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. The babies, three girls and two boys, were named Jada Priscilla, Rebekah Alesha, Genesis Raquel, Christian Emmanuel, and Matthew David.
