Minor Leagues
Garrett was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles, the 48th overall pick of the 2005 draft. This was a "sandwich" pick, between the 1st and 2nd rounds, in compensation for the Oriole's failure to sign RHP Wade Townsend, their first round selection in the 2004 draft.

He spent most of the 2005 season with the Class A Aberdeen IronBirds, and was named the 8th-best prospect in the New York-Penn League.

Garrett then pitched for the Class A Frederick Keys, where he held opponents to a .192 batting average, and was named the Orioles' 6th-best prospect by Baseball America following the season.

In 2006, he advanced from Class A Frederick to AA Bowie, going a combined 10-9 with a 3.10 ERA, and striking out 162 batters in 165.2 innings. He was again named the Orioles' 6th-best prospect by Baseball America following the season, and was named the Baltimore Orioles Minor League Player of the Year.

Major Leagues
In 2007, when Orioles starter Steve Trachsel went down with an injury, Garrett was promoted from the Norfolk Tides. He made his major league debut on July 4, 2007 against the Chicago White Sox, but did not record a decision. He earned his first career win in his next start, also against the White Sox, on July 15.

In September, 2007 he was shut down for the rest of the year due to forearm tightness. In his 2008 campaign to date, he has a 5.79 ERA.
