Michael Peca is a Canadian center on the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Peca was drafted by Vancouver in 1992. He played only 37 games in 2 seasons with Vancouver before moving to Buffalo. He was team captain for a number of years with the Sabres, including 1999, when he led the team to the Stanley Cup Finals. After a disagreement over his contract, he was traded to the New York Islanders. Peca played three seasons with the Islanders, including his best statistical season in 2001-02, with 25 goals and 60 points. He was named captain of the Islanders during his stay with the team.
After the lockout, Peca was traded to Edmonton , where he helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006. The following season, he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, who hoped that his defensive abilities would help them. (Peca has won two Selke trophies as the NHL's best defensive forward). Unfortunately, he suffered a broken leg midway through the season and spent the rest of the season on injured reserve. In 2007, he signed with Columbus.
Peca has played for Team Canada three times, winning a gold medal at the 1994 World Junior Championships, and a gold medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. He was an assistant captain in 2002, and captained the 2001 World Championship squad.
