In 2005 he was honored for the First Team Preseason All-American by Baseball America, Louisville Slugger, and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Minor Leagues
Jed was chosen in the first round of the 2005 draft by the Boston Red Sox. From 2005 through 2007, Jed advanced through Boston's minor league system.

Major Leagues
Jed was called up on April 10, 2008 after Mike Lowell was placed on the DL. He made his debut on April 15, driving home three runs in a 5-3 victory in Cleveland.

He was sent back down upon Lowell's return, but then called up again to replace Julio Lugo who had gone on the DL. He is currently on the active roster.
