Damien Martyn

Damien Martyn was a middle order right handed batsman and an occasional medium pacer. He was a very capable fieldsman in the covers known for his fascinating run outs and had also kept the wicket once in a while during his first class cricketing days. This Australian player was particularly known for his classic technique and his shots square of the off stump. He was a strong player off back foot and front. These skills along with a die hard attitude were what made him one of the most promising cricketers of his times.

At the age of three Damien had survived a cyclone following which he and his family shifted to Perth, where Damien finished his schooling from Girrawheen High School. He went on to Captain the Australian under-19 team and also played for Western Australia, Leicestershire and Yorkshire. Damien made his first International appearance in a test match against the West Indies in 1992. Damien too had his share of lows in his career and was hugely criticized for Australia?s test defeat against South Africa in 1993-94. Damien made a comeback in 2000 and was the perfect replacement for Mark Waugh after he retired and left a void in the Australian middle batting order. In 2004 when Australia won their series victory on Indian soil after 30 years, he was made the man of the series. The same year he also almost became the second Australian batsman after Sir Don Bradman to make three centuries in three innings and got out for 97 runs in the second innings. In 2006 he won two consecutive Man of the Match titles against England and India during the 2006 Champions Trophy Tournament. He went on to play 67 Test matches and 208 ODI?s with his top ODI score as 144 not out.
