Tim Wakefield is an American starting pitcher on the Boston Red Sox. He is one of very few knuckleballers still remaining in the major leagues.
Wakefield was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in 1988, drafted as a position player, until he developed the knuckleball that made him an effective pitcher. He won the NL Rookie Pitcher of the Year award in 1992, but struggled in the following season. He was signed by Boston in 1995 and has remained with the team since then. He is the longest member of the Red Sox, and will most likely be with the team for the rest of his career. Over his 16 year career, Wakefield has 173 wins, 22 saves and a 4.33 ERA.
