Mats Sundin

Mats Sundin is a Swedish hockey forward who plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Sudden, or Captain Clutch as his Toronto fan clan refers to him, has been playing in the NHL since 1989 when he, as first European hockey player ever, was drafted first overall by the Quebec Nordiques from his native Stockholm's team Djurgårdens IF. He was the second best scorer in Quebec in his first season (1991/91) after Joe Sakic and number one the next season with 114 points. He was quickly considered one of the best young players in the NHL.

In 1994 he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs and was made captain in 1997 becoming the first European player to ever captain an NHL team. He is now the longest serving non-American captain in NHL history.

Sundin is known to perform well in high-pressure situations and he holds the NHL record for most goals in overtime.

He is the 2nd all-time in goals in the Toronto Maple Leafs and 3rd all-time in assists. Sudden is the first Swede to pass 500 goals.

Sudden has won the Swedish Championship once and was named to the Elitserien All-Star Team four times. He has been awarded Best Forward in the World Championship and named to the All-Star team in the Canada Cup and in the World Cup of Hockey. He has played 9 NHL All-Star Games and on Olympic Tournamnent All-Star.
