  • Nationality: Puerto Rico
  • Birth date: 1975-01-27 (33 years)
  • Place of birth: Guaynabo, Puerto Rico
  • Nickname: "Iron Boy"
There is good reason for Ivan Calderon to be proclaimed as Iron Boy. Before turning into a professional boxer, Ivan was already winning fights left and right in his amateur career. As an amateur boxer, he represented Puerto Rico in various international competitions. One of his greatest accomplishments as an amateur boxer was being able to represent Puerto Rico in the 2000 Olympic Games held in Australia. There wasn’t much of a difference when Ivan turned professional, he still fought in international competitions and still managed to win them. Perhaps the biggest change that happened when Ivan turned professional was that he became even more famous and even greater as a boxer.

As a professional boxer, Ivan’s fights were frequently featured on the show “Friday Night Fights” on ESPN. His first world championship victory was on May 3, 2003 when he defeated Eduardo Marquez for the WBO World Strawweight title. Just as he fought well in garnering his first world championship, he fought even better to retain the title against boxers such as Lorenzo Trejo, Alex Sanches, Edgar Cardenas, Carlos Fajardo, Noel Tunacao, Gerardo Verde, Daniel Reyes, Isaac Bustos, Miguel Tellez and Jose Luis Varela. After defending his title for 10 matches, the WBO recognized Ivan Calderon as the Super Champion of boxing.

After his first fight in the year 2007, Ivan announced that he wanted to change weight divisions. After 12 successful defenses of his world title, Ivan moved to the Light Flyweight division from his previous Strawweight division. His first fight in this new division was against Hugo Cazares on August 25, 2007. It was a successful fight that made Ivan known as the new WBO Light Flyweight Champion. It was after this significant victory that gave Peurto Rico another great boxer. Ivan was the 11th boxer to ever win multiple world championships. His first title defense was against Juan Esquer on December 1, 2007. It was a fight that lasted twelve rounds and by unanimous decision, Ivan was proclaimed the victor. His second title defense took place just recently on the fourth of April, 2008 defeating Nelson Dieppa and retaining his championship.

The world is anxious to see Ivan’s next title defenses but with a record of 31 wins with 6 knockouts and 0 losses, it will be easy to predict that Ivan will hold his title for a long time still.
