Kelly Andrew Johnson was born on February 22, 1982 in Austin, Texas.

Minor Leagues
Kelly did not go to college, but was drafted straight out of high school in the first round (38th overall) of the 2000 Major League Baseball Draft by the Atlanta Braves. He came up through the minors as a shortstop and third baseman.

He made his Major League debut with the Braves on May 29, 2005 and became a fixture in the outfield, because many Braves players were down with injuries early in the 2005 season.

Kelly himself had an elbow injury, and missed all of the 2006 season after having Tommy John surgery.

During the offseason, he worked with Braves first base coach Glenn Hubbard at Turner Field to learn how to play second base - his new position. He earned the starting position at second base for the 2007 season.

However, offensive struggles caused him to be platooned with Yunel Escobar during the latter half of the season. In 2008, Escobar because the Brave's full-time short stop and Kelly regained his full-time role at second base.
