At the tender age of 18, Alisa Kleybanova is already making waves in the world of tennis. She won her first ITF tournament in Mollerusa, Spain at age 14 in 2003. She turned professional the same year. She also entered two tournaments in Spain and entered the final and quarterfinal rounds.
In January 2004, she played in Tampa, Florida but lost the title to Kelly McCain. She also entered Indian Wells and at her current ranking of No. 623, she defeated No. 58 Jelena Kostanic but lost to Israeli Anna Smashnova. Kleybanova also entered the ITF tournament in Jackson, Massachusetts and a Tier V event in Budapest, Hungary as well as tournaments in Biella, Italy and Oporto, Portugal.
In 2005, her ranking sunk down to No. 730 in July and competed in several tournaments in Great Britain, China, Moscow and Japan. Her efforts helped her pull her ranking to No. 244 by the end of the year. By 2006, she opened the year with the Pattaya Open in Thailand but lost in the first round. She entered the World Top 200 ranking by taking the Campobasso title and picking up $25,000 in cash prize.
She went up and down in the world rankings in 2007 almost clinching the ITF title in Maestre in Italy. She pulled her ranking up again in Bordeaux, France but lost to Alize Cornet. She did, however, won her sixth ITF title in Lecce, Italy beating Marta Marrero 6-1, 6-0 in the final round.
She opened 2008 with a loss at the Mondial Australian Women’s Hardcourts. She reached the quarterfinals of the Proximus Diamond Games losing to Justine Henin as well as the Grand Prix De Sar La Princesse in April and the International Women’s Open in June. She has done well in the Wimbledon reaching the Fourth Round but was defeated by seventh-seeded Venus Williams. Alisa Kleybanova is currently ranked WTA No. 42.
