Nonito Donaire Jr. is a Filipino professional boxer. He was born in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines, and raised in General Santos City, Philippines, from where renowned boxer Manny Pacquiao hails. Donaire currently resides in San Leandro, California, where he trains with his father and cousins. He is nicknamed as "The Filipino Flash" due to his intense speed and reflexes during fights.
During his amateur boxing career, Donaire won 3 national amateur tournaments. These were the National Silver Gloves in 1998, the National Junior Olympics in 1999, and the National USA Tournament in 2000. Intenationally, he won the International Junior Olympics in 1999. He had an amateur record of 68 wins and 8 losses with 5 TKOs.
Nonito Donaire Jr. turned pro in 2001, but had to face his only professional career defeat on his second fight. Donaire won his first regional title by defeating Kaichon Sor Vorapin for the vacant WBO Asia Pacific flyweight title in Guam on September 9, 2002. On January 20, 2006, Donaire defeated Kahren Harutyunyan on Shobox by split decision in order to win his second regional title, the NABF super flyweight title. Arguably his greatest win to date was over undefeated Vic Darchinyan via 5th round knockout, claiming the IBF and IBO flyweight title.
With a professional career record of 19 wins and one loss, with 12 wins coming from technical knock outs, Nonito Donaire Jr. is on the top of his game. He received many awards for his in-ring accomplishments. He was named the “Most Outstanding Boxer of the Year” by World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2007. His championship victory over Darchinyan was awarded as “Knockout of the Year” and “Upset of the Year” by Ring Magazine on December 23, 2007. He also received the Philippine Sports Award “Athlete of the Year” for 2007.
