Jerry Alan West is a professional retired basketball who played for the Los Angeles Lakers under the National Basketball Association. He played as a point guard for the Lakers and his jersey number was 44.

West completed his High School from the East Bank High School in West Virginia. He also played for the school team and represented the basketball team in the state level competitions. He pursued his further education from the West Virginia University. He was a part of the university basketball team. In the 1960 South Conference season he was amongst the top most point's scorer leading the table with 908 points.

After a successful season at the domestic levels West was drafted to the Los Angeles Lakers at the end of the 1960 season. He was a part of the regular team and performed considerably well in his initial time with the team. In the 1969 season he averaged 30 ppg. The team made it to the NBA finals but went down to the New York Knicks by just 1 point difference. Although having lost the match, West's performance was one of the best of his career.

In the 1970s West was one of the most respected players in NBA at the age of 35. He was also a part of the team that won the NBA finals in the 1971-72 season. After one more successful season in 1974 West decided to retire from the NBA. He further went on to become a coach for the Lakers.
