William Felton Bill Russell is a retired professional basketball player who played for the Boston Celtics under the National Basketball Association (NBA). He played as a center and his jersey number was 6.
Bill completed his schooling from the McClymonds High School where he was also a part of the high school team. Further he went to the University of San Francisco where he was offered a basketball scholarship looking at his past performances in the high school tournaments. He was further drafted in the 1956 NBA draft.
Boston Celtics signed Bill in 1956 and added him to the defensive side of the team. Bill did not make to the initial stages of his first season because of the Olympic Games. He joined the Celtics in the mid season and successfully played 48 games with an average score 14.7 ppg and leading the rebound score 19.6.
In the 1957 season the Celtics made it to the eastern conference finals. They also qualified for the playoffs where Bill had an average of 16 points and 31 rebounds. The Celtics managed to get through to the playoff finals and faced the Milwaukee Hawks. The Celtics went down to win the finals in the last few seconds which was regarded as one of the closest encounters in NBA.
In the 1962-63 season Bill scored his highest career points with an average of 18.9 ppg and 23.6 rpg. In this season the Celtics went on to win 60 games to break the franchise win record. They met the Los Angeles Lakers in the finals where they were successful in defeating the Lakers by a score of 110-107.
In 1969 Bill Russell retired from NBA after serving as one of the best players for the Boston Celtics. At the end of his career he had scored 14,522 points, 21,620 rebounds and 4,100 assists.
