Trevor Immelman is a professional golfer who was born in Cape Town, South Africa on December 16, 1979. His family is known to be a "golfing family" being that his dad, Johan, is a former commissioner of the Sunshine Tour in South Africa. Immelman took hold of his first golf club at the age of 5, following his brother Mark, who is nine years older than he is and teaches golf.
By the time Immelman was 13-17, he played in the African Junior Golf Association Tour. In 1999, Immelman turned pro. He became a full member of the European Tour in 2001, only joining the PGA Tour in 2006. From the day he joined the European Tour, he already has four wins. Then in 2004, he became the first man to have successfully defended the South African Open title in years, since Gary Player in 1970s.
2006 was a great year for Immelman as he became a father for the first time. Despite having to withdraw from the 2006 Open Championship to be there for the birth of his first child, Immelman finished his year by reaching Top 10 of the PGA Tour, and being named as the "Rookie of the Year."
In 2007, Immelman discontinued from the South African Airways Open due to some discomfort felt around his ribcage area plus some problems with his breathing. By December 18, doctors discovered a lesion with a size similar to a golf ball on his diaphragm. A series of exams, medication, and treatment of the lesion caused Immelman to be absent for eight weeks of the 2008 PGA Tour. However, Immelman decided to make a comeback and he bounced back hard, winning the 2008 Masters Tournament, beating the world-favorite Tiger Woods by three strokes.
Since his career start in 1999, Immelman has won 2 PGA Tours, 4 European Tours (2008 Masters Tournament win is also noted as a European Tour win), 1 Challenge Tour (Tusker Kenya Open, 2000), and 3 Sunshine Tours.
