Dominique Danyell Canty was born on March 2, 1977, in Chicago, Illinois to Sammy and Beatrice Canty. She is the youngest of five children.
High School
Dominique attended Whitney Young High School, where she was a 1995 Street & Smith All-American and a four-time All-State player.
University
Dominique attended the University of Alabama and majored in criminal justice with a minor in social work. She played basketball for the Crimson Tide. In her senior year, she was named First-Team All-American by the Associated Press and The Sporting News. She finished her career as a two-time All-American and four-time All-SEC selection, and averaged 18.1 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.6 assists during her four seasons.
In her four seasons, Dominique scored 2,294, the highest career total for any basketball player, male or female, in school history. She averaged 21.5 points as a junior in 1997-98, which was the second-highest single season scoring average in school history. She is the only player in school history to rank in the top five in the career charts for points, rebounds, steals and assists.
WNBA
During the 1999 WNBA Draft, Dominique was chosen by the Detroit Shock in the 3rd round, as the 29th overall pick.
She made an excellent debut in her rookie season, and was the runner-up in the 1999 WNBA Rookie of the Year voting (Chamique Holdsclaw won the award, Dominique was tied with Orlando's Nykesha Sales and New York's Tamika Whitmore for second).
She spent the 1999-2000 off-season in the Shock's public relations department as an intern.
After the 2001 WNBA season ended, she served as an assistant coach for the Chicago State University women's basketball team.
In 2003, Dominique played with the Chicago Blaze of the National Women's Basketball League prior to the 2003 WNBA season. After four seasons with the Shock, she was traded to the Houston Comets on April 28, 2003 in exchange for the draft rights to Allison Curtin (Houston's 2003 first-round draft choice).
Dominique played for Krakow, Poland's FIBA team, Wisla Can-Pack in 2006. On February 12, 2007, the Chicago Sky signed her as a free agent.
