Chris Osgood is a Canadian goalie on the Detroit Red Wings.
Osgood was drafted by Detroit in 1991, and made his first start in 1993. Detroit had multiple goalies at the time, but Osgood proved himself and was named the starter for the playoffs. In 1994, Detroit acquired Mike Vernon, who was named the starter. Osgood was his backup at first, but won the starting role for the 1995-96 season, leading the NHL with 39 wins. He scored an empty net goal that season, making him only the second goalie to shoot and score in a game.
In 1997, Osgood was again Vernon's backup as Detroit won their first Stanley Cup. After Vernon was traded, Osgood led Detroit back to the Cup and won again in 1998. He signed with the New York Islanders in 2001, after the Wings had signed superstar Dominik Hasek. Osgood was traded to St. Louis in 2003 after splitting time with Garth Snow and Rick DiPietro in New York. He remained in St. Louis until the lockout.
After the lockout, Osgood returned to Detroit. Osgood was never a full-time starter due to the presence of Manny Legace, and the resigning of Dominik Hasek in 2006. In 2007-08, Hasek and Osgood split time fairly evenly, and Osgood finished the season with a 2.09 GAA and a 27-9-4 record. Although Hasek was named the starter for the playoffs, he struggled early, and Osgood took over brilliantly. He recorded shutouts in Games 1 and 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals, and finished with a 14-4 record and a GAA of 1.55, winning his 3rd Stanley Cup, all in a Detroit uniform.
Osgood has won 363 games, making him 15th among all NHL goalies.
